As a part of our Environmental Policy Framework, Goldman Sachs committed up to $1 billion for investments in renewable energy and energy efficiency projects. By the end of 2008, we surpassed that goal and invested over $2.5 billion in clean technology such as renewable energy and energy efficiency projects around the world.
In February 2009, Cogentrix, a subsidiary of Goldman Sachs, acquired Sunray Energy, Inc., the owner and operator of the first two utility-scale solar trough plants built in the world. In addition to utility-scale solar, Cogentrix is developing run-of-river hydroelectric projects in Turkey and wind energy in Puerto Rico. It has also made strategic investments in solar photovoltaic cell manufacturers Suniva and SpectraWatt, as well as in smart-grid company GridPoint.
